HPSD Expands Extended Stop Arm Safety Initiative With New Installations

🚍 Extended Stop Arms Installed on HPSD Buses to Enhance Student Safety

High Prairie School Division has installed two new Extended Stop Arms (ESAs) on buses identified as having some of the highest numbers of illegal school-bus fly-bys—dangerous incidents where drivers pass a stopped school bus while red lights are flashing.

As part of a Board-approved safety initiative (September 16), three ESAs are being added across the division to improve visibility, increase driver compliance, and better protect students during loading and unloading.

📍 Recent Installations

Bus 213 – Donnelly/Falher area
Driven by Janine Koch (Route D-46), this bus serves a region with one of the highest reported fly-by counts.

Bus 225 – High Prairie area
Driven by Madeline Andrews, this route also ranked among those with frequent incidents.

HPSD’s Transportation Department is now completing the third ESA installation on a Slave Lake–area route.

🚨 A Critical Reminder for All Drivers

When a school bus has its red lights flashing, it means students are loading or unloading.
All traffic in both directions must come to a complete stop.

These safety measures are only effective when drivers do their part. Thank you for helping us protect our students and ensure every child gets to and from school safely.
