mâmawihitowin Brings School Community Together

Joussard School’s first mâmawihitowin ( mah-mah-WEE-hee-toh-win ) luncheon of the 2026–27 school year was a success, bringing families, students, staff, and community together on Wednesday, September 23. Over lunch, Principal Melissa Isaac welcomed families and shared what was happening at the school and what they could look forward to in the year ahead. Families shared the meal with their children, and afterwards Mrs. Isaac invited everyone outside to visit the school’s Medicine Garden, where students and staff have successfully grown sweetgrass, sage, tobacco, and mint.
Mrs. Isaac introduced the monthly mâmawihitowin luncheons last school year as a way to bring people together to share food, ideas, and kinship. The nêhiyaw word mâmawihitowin speaks to the idea of gathering or coming together, which is at the heart of these monthly events. At a small school like Joussard, relationships are at the heart of the school community, and this event gives families, students, staff, and community members a chance to get to know one another and strengthen those connections. The gatherings also support the school’s commitment to creating a place where students feel safe, seen, and connected, a school where they want to be.
The next mamawihitowin will take place on 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟏 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟐 𝐩.𝐦. Families and community members are welcome to attend, share a meal, and spend time together. 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐒𝐕𝐏 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐭 𝟕𝟖𝟎-𝟕𝟕𝟔-𝟑𝟕𝟓𝟑.
